EU Considers Sanctions Against Patriarch Kirill Amid Ongoing Discussions

The European Union is contemplating a new round of sanctions that could target high-ranking members of the Russian Orthodox Church, including Patriarch Kirill, also known as Vladimir Gundyayev. This information comes from Politico, citing six EU officials and diplomats familiar with the discussions.

Patriarch Kirill has been a vocal supporter of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, describing the conflict in Donbas as a “metaphysical struggle” and asserting that Russia has never historically attacked anyone. He is already on sanctions lists in the UK, Canada, and the Czech Republic, while Estonia and Lithuania have barred him from entering their territories.

The upcoming sanctions package is expected to also focus on Russian tankers operating under a “shadow fleet,” along with Russian banks, financial institutions, and military-industrial companies. Additionally, firms involved in the sale of stolen Ukrainian grain are likely to be included.

European officials are also considering advancing sanctions that were previously blocked by Viktor Orban, the former Prime Minister of Hungary.

According to Politico, the discussions on these new sanctions are still in the early stages, with ministers currently expected to present their initial proposals. The 21st sanctions package is anticipated to be approved by the end of June or early July.

In Ukraine, Patriarch Kirill faces official accusations of crimes under several articles of the Criminal Code, including encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, justification and denial of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, as well as planning, preparation, initiation, and waging of aggressive war.

The EU is considering sanctions against Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church for his support of the war in Ukraine. The new sanctions package may also target Russian financial institutions and military companies, with discussions still in the preliminary phase.
