Ukrainian military operations have ramped up significantly in 2026, particularly in mid-range strikes along the front lines, according to a recent report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). These enhanced efforts are reportedly hindering Russia’s ability to transport troops and sustain positions in occupied territories.
ISW analysts noted that Ukraine’s successful use of drones has led to considerable operational achievements. Specifically, these strikes have impaired Russia’s access to key ground communication lines connecting the country to occupied Crimea, including the M-14 highway from Rostov to Crimea, as well as routes linking southern Ukraine to Donetsk.
Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov highlighted the impact of these operations, describing a “logistical lockdown” affecting Russian forces due to Ukraine’s intensified mid-range strike campaigns targeting supply routes. This disruption is expected to significantly reduce the number of additional Russian reservists able to reach the front lines, thereby limiting their operational effectiveness.
The report indicates that Ukrainian forces are gaining temporary tactical advantages in certain areas through drone usage. These mid-range strikes are actively obstructing Russian troop movements and supply efforts, which could further weaken Russia’s ground operations under current conditions.
Moreover, Ukrainian drone operations are thwarting Russian infiltration missions. ISW referenced a pro-Kremlin war correspondent’s statement from May 26, indicating that Ukrainian reconnaissance and strikes have disrupted Russian plans that relied on these missions over recent months.
“Ukrainian forces have established a deep operational zone for drones from mid-range to the front line, making it unclear whether additional mobilization of reserves will significantly enhance Russian combat capabilities without first countering Ukrainian drone operations,” the report concluded.
On May 21, Minister Fedorov stated in a press briefing that Ukraine has managed to substantially slow the advance of Russian forces and gradually regain initiative on the battlefield. This progress is attributed to the efforts of Ukrainian military personnel, as well as factors such as the disabling of Starlink services for the aggressor and the increase in mid-range drone strikes.
Ukrainian military operations have intensified in 2026, focusing on mid-range strikes that disrupt Russian logistics and troop movements. This strategy is yielding tactical advantages and limiting Russia's operational capabilities on the front lines.
