Ukraine Plans to Produce 25,000 Ground Robots by Mid-2026

Ukraine aims to manufacture 25,000 ground robots by the first half of 2026, as these machines increasingly replace human personnel in high-risk areas. The deployment of these robotic systems has reached unprecedented levels, with their capabilities expanding rapidly.

Ground robotic complexes (GRCs) have emerged as versatile tools on the battlefield, performing tasks such as evacuating the wounded, engaging enemy forces, and laying mines. Military commanders refer to them as a form of ‘new cavalry,’ as they can accomplish missions in minutes that previously endangered soldiers’ lives.

According to Alexander Afanasyev, commander of the GRC battalion in the ‘K-2’ brigade, the primary motivation behind the widespread adoption of these robots is to save the lives of soldiers. This brigade is noted for being the world’s first unit to specialize entirely in the operation of ground drones at the front lines.

Data reported by The Telegraph, citing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, indicates a rapid increase in the number of missions involving ground platforms. Notably, in April, these robots executed 10,281 missions for supply and evacuation purposes, averaging 343 missions per day. In contrast, only 2,900 missions were recorded in November of the previous year.

Robert Tollast, an expert at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), noted that this technological leap is altering the nature of modern warfare, suggesting that battles involving robots may soon become commonplace.

The shift towards unmanned systems has been largely driven by the heightened activity of Russian drones. The area surrounding the front has become a ‘death zone,’ where any moving target is quickly subjected to fire. Previously, logistics relied on pickups and armored vehicles, but these were often destroyed faster than they could be replaced. The use of GRCs allows for the delivery of resources and the maintenance of positions when human presence in the area is too perilous.

Ukraine is set to produce 25,000 ground robots by mid-2026, reflecting a significant shift in military operations aimed at reducing human casualties. The increasing use of these robotic systems highlights a transformation in modern warfare dynamics amidst ongoing conflict.
