Latvia Reports Drone Incursions from Russia

In the early hours of May 7, unidentified drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia, prompting a swift response from the country’s air force. Reports indicate that two drones fell within Latvian territory, with one already located and efforts ongoing to find the second.

The alert was raised around 4:00 AM in the regions of Balvi, Ludza, and Rezekne. Maris Tutins, a representative of the National Armed Forces, noted that military personnel received multiple signals regarding potential drone incursions prior to the alert, leading to the immediate readiness of a Baltic air patrol group.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds suggested that the drones could have originated from Ukraine, emphasizing that Ukraine has the right to defend itself, including conducting strikes on Russian territory.

“Russian aggression against Ukraine has repercussions for the wider region, unfortunately including Latvia. There is a preliminary likelihood that these drones were targeting objectives in Russia from Ukraine. However, this is merely a supposition, and further information is needed,” said Spruds.

By approximately 5:30 AM, the National Armed Forces confirmed the downing of two drones, with one already identified and search operations continuing for the other.

This situation remains under investigation.

Latvia's airspace was breached by drones from Russia early on May 7, leading to military alerts and the downing of two drones. The origin of the drones is under scrutiny, with potential links to Ukraine.
