Trump Suspends ‘Freedom Project’ Amid Regional Negotiations

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt to the ‘Freedom Project,’ which aimed to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, following requests from Pakistan and other nations. The previously declared maritime blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect.

In a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump cited the impressive military successes achieved during the campaign against Iran and significant progress toward a comprehensive agreement with Iranian representatives as reasons for the suspension. He noted, “While the blockade will remain in place, the ‘Freedom Project’ will be temporarily paused to assess the possibility of finalizing and signing an agreement.”

According to the International Maritime Organization, approximately 2,000 vessels remain blocked in the Persian Gulf, carrying around 20,000 sailors.

Recent developments leading to this decision include trilateral talks held in Islamabad on April 11, where U.S. and Iranian officials, facilitated by Pakistan, failed to reach a ceasefire agreement. Following these discussions, the U.S. Navy initiated a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

On May 3, Trump announced the launch of the ‘Freedom Project,’ aimed at assisting vessels from neutral countries that have been stranded in the Middle East. The following day, he issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that any interference with the operation could result in severe consequences.

President Trump's decision to suspend the 'Freedom Project' reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts amid heightened tensions in the region. The maritime blockade of Iranian ports continues as negotiations evolve.
