U.S. Secretary of State Calls Cuba’s Status ‘Unacceptable’ Amid Ongoing Tensions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described the situation concerning Cuba as “unacceptable,” citing the proximity of a nation aligned with Washington’s adversaries just 90 miles from American shores. He indicated that the U.S. government plans to address the issue of Cuba in the future.

During a briefing at the White House, Rubio stated, “There is a failed state that is also a friendly territory for some of our adversaries. This status quo is unacceptable, and we will deal with it. But not today.” He emphasized that there is no oil blockade against Cuba, but pointed out that the country’s economic model is failing, and its leadership is unable to rectify the situation.

“The only thing worse than a communist is an incompetent one. An incompetent communist is running this country, and he doesn’t know how to fix it,” Rubio added.

On January 30, President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency regarding Cuba, asserting that the actions of the Cuban government pose an “extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security and foreign policy. He accused Havana of supporting “hostile nations and terrorist organizations,” including Russia, China, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

The Cuban government has countered these claims, stating that the U.S. represents a threat to their sovereignty and has declared an “international state of emergency.” On March 6, Trump claimed that the Cuban government would soon collapse and expressed a desire to negotiate with them. He also suggested appointing Secretary Rubio as a representative in Cuba.

Trump has been vocal about his intention to dismantle the communist regime in Cuba, accusing its leaders of terrorism, drug trafficking to the U.S., and fostering anti-American sentiments in the region. On March 10, he outlined two options for the Cuban authorities: either agree to a change in leadership with U.S. support or face inevitable consequences.

“This could be a friendly takeover. Or it might not be friendly. It doesn’t matter because they are already on their last breath. They have no energy. They have no money,” Trump stated, highlighting the severe economic and humanitarian crisis in Cuba.

Despite the ongoing tensions, Trump mentioned that representatives from the Cuban government have reached out to the U.S. due to the dire economic situation, indicating that discussions between Washington and Havana are already taking place regarding potential developments.

On March 13, Senate Democrats introduced a resolution aimed at prohibiting Trump from using military force against Cuba without prior Congressional approval.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has labeled Cuba's alignment with adversarial nations as 'unacceptable' and indicated future U.S. actions regarding the island. President Trump has declared a state of emergency over Cuba, citing national security threats, while the Cuban government has countered with claims of U.S. aggression.
