Ukraine Intercepts Majority of Russian Drone and Missile Attacks in Overnight Assault

In the early hours of May 5, Russian forces launched a significant aerial assault on Ukraine, deploying 164 attack drones, including models such as Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas, alongside 11 Iskander-M ballistic missiles. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted 149 of these drones and one missile, according to reports from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Ukrainian military’s response involved a coordinated effort from aviation units, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare divisions, and mobile fire groups. This multi-faceted approach aimed to counter the extensive aerial threat posed by the Russian offensive.

As of 9:00 AM, preliminary reports indicated that Ukrainian defenses had neutralized one ballistic missile and 149 drones, including various types aimed at different regions across the country, including the north, south, east, and central areas.

Despite the high interception rate, the attack resulted in the successful strikes of eight ballistic missiles and 14 drones across 14 locations. Additionally, debris from the intercepted missiles fell in ten areas, raising concerns about potential damage. Two missiles reportedly failed to reach their intended targets, though further information is still being confirmed. The aerial assault from Russia appears to be ongoing, with several drones remaining active in Ukrainian airspace.

The recent Russian aerial offensive on Ukraine involved a large number of drones and ballistic missiles, with Ukrainian forces managing to intercept the majority. Despite this success, some missiles and drones did reach their targets, highlighting the ongoing threat in the region.
