As of May 4, the Ukrainian military reported 132 combat encounters along the front lines, with significant activity noted in various regions. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shared that Russian forces conducted a missile strike, executed 54 airstrikes, and dropped 175 guided bombs throughout the day.
In addition to these aerial assaults, the enemy deployed 5,782 kamikaze drones and carried out 2,525 shelling incidents targeting both populated areas and Ukrainian military positions. The report, updated at 10 PM, indicated that one-third of the clashes occurred in three key directions: the Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk areas in Donetsk, and the Huliaipole region in Zaporizhzhia.
Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled 12 enemy assaults near Kostiantynivka, Illinivka, Pleshchiyivka, and Stepaniivka, with two ongoing combat engagements still in progress. In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian troops launched 21 attacks, attempting to advance in the vicinity of several settlements including Rodynske, Udačne, Novopavlivka, Novoluhanske, Molodetske, Novomykolaivka, and Muravka.
The Huliaipole direction also saw 10 attacks, particularly around Zalyzhnichne, Hirke, Staroukrainka, Olenokostyantynivka, Yablukove, Sviatopetrivka, Charivne, Verkhnya Tersa, and Vozdvizhivska. Currently, one combat engagement is ongoing in this area.
Fighting has also been reported in the Northern Slobozhansky, Kursk, Southern Slobozhansky, Lyman, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Oleksandrivka, Orikhiv, and Dnipro directions.
On April 26, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, noted a surge in Russian military activity across nearly the entire front line. He emphasized that Ukrainian forces are focusing on careful planning, innovative solutions, and effective use of available resources, which has led to significant enemy losses that exceed their capacity for reinforcements.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on April 23, characterized the current situation on the front as unique, stating that Ukrainian positions are more stable than in previous months and years. However, he cautioned that Russia continues to prepare for aerial attacks on Ukraine.
The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) previously indicated that the realities of the battlefield as of the end of March 2026 suggest that substantial Russian gains, let alone a complete victory, are not inevitable.
Ukrainian forces are engaged in intense combat along multiple fronts, successfully repelling numerous Russian assaults while facing significant aerial and drone attacks. The situation remains dynamic as both sides continue to strategize and adapt to ongoing challenges.
