Russia Proposes Ceasefire with Ukraine for Victory Day Celebrations

The Russian government, led by President Vladimir Putin, has announced a proposed ceasefire with Ukraine during the upcoming Victory Day celebrations. This declaration was made by the Russian Ministry of Defense via Telegram.

According to the announcement, a ceasefire is set to be observed on May 8-9, 2026, as per the directive of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. The ministry expressed hope that Ukraine would follow suit and agree to this temporary cessation of hostilities.

In a related statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense referenced remarks made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting that Ukrainian drones might fly over Moscow during the Victory Day parade. In response, Russian officials assured that they would take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the parade.

The ministry further threatened that any attempts by the Ukrainian government to disrupt the 81st anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War would result in a significant missile strike on central Kyiv. They claimed that prior restraint from such actions was based on humanitarian considerations.

Additionally, Russian authorities advised residents of Kyiv and staff of foreign diplomatic missions to leave the city in a timely manner.

Details are still emerging…

The Russian government has proposed a ceasefire with Ukraine during the Victory Day celebrations, while simultaneously issuing threats against potential disruptions. This dual approach highlights ongoing tensions as both nations prepare for significant commemorative events.
