The Finnish Armed Forces have clarified their protocols regarding the interception of drones, indicating that such actions cannot occur directly at the border or within another country’s airspace during peacetime.
Military officials emphasized that they refrain from taking action until an object is positively identified and avoid intercepting drones if there is a risk of debris or munitions falling into Russian territory.
Preliminary reports suggest that the drones entered Finland from the south, traveled along the border for a period, and subsequently returned eastward, exiting the country’s airspace.
In response to the situation, temporary flight restrictions have been implemented in the Kotka and Hamina areas, located in the eastern Gulf of Finland. This measure aims to provide the military with a more controlled environment for potential interception.
The Border Guard is currently investigating the incident; however, the Armed Forces have not disclosed whether the origin of the drones has been determined.
