On May 2, a balloon equipped as a relay for Russian drones was detected crossing from Belarus into Ukrainian airspace, according to Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. This revelation was made during a live broadcast on the “Unified News” telethon.
Demchenko indicated that the Border Guard Service anticipates further provocations from Belarus. He described the balloon as a tool utilized to enhance the signal for aerial attack systems employed by Russia against Ukraine.
“Essentially, this device was used as a relay to strengthen the signal for the aerial assault systems that Russia deploys during attacks on Ukraine,” Demchenko stated.
He also mentioned that Ukrainian intelligence continues to monitor developments in Belarus, noting that Russian forces are conducting assault operations near the border with Ukraine. However, he reported no significant troop buildup in the vicinity of Chernihiv.
Earlier on the same day, President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted unusual activity along certain sections of the border with Belarus. He assured that Ukraine is closely observing the situation and is prepared to respond if necessary.
On April 17, President Zelensky expressed concerns about Russia’s attempts to draw Belarus into the conflict, pointing out that infrastructure developments, including road construction and artillery positioning, are occurring in Belarusian border areas directed towards Ukraine.
