Former President Donald Trump has revealed plans for a more extensive withdrawal of American military personnel from Germany than previously anticipated. This announcement came during a press interaction before his departure from Palm Beach.
When questioned about his decision to decrease troop levels in Germany, Trump stated,
“We are going to significantly reduce the numbers and we are cutting them much more than 5,000,”
indicating a substantial shift in U.S. military strategy.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that it would be withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany, relocating them to the United States and other international positions.
On April 30, 2026, amidst tensions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the ongoing conflict in Iran, Trump mentioned that his administration was considering further troop reductions in Germany.
Additionally, Trump has previously indicated that he may also reduce military presence in Italy, citing NATO allies’ refusal to participate in the U.S. and Israel’s conflict with Iran.
In May 2025, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker announced that Washington intended to initiate discussions with European allies regarding the reduction of American forces in Europe.
