King Charles III’s Meeting with Trump to Be Closed to Press Amid Concerns

King Charles III’s upcoming meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., will take place behind closed doors due to concerns over potential controversies similar to those experienced during Trump’s past interactions with foreign leaders.

The decision for a private meeting format was primarily advocated by British officials. During a previous encounter in February 2025, Trump publicly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, prompting the need for a more controlled environment this time.

King Charles arrived in Washington on Monday evening, with significant events scheduled for Tuesday, including a bilateral meeting with Trump in the Oval Office and a speech before the U.S. Congress. Accompanying the king will be palace staff and British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Sources indicate that Cooper is prepared to intervene should discussions veer off course. One insider noted, “She is ready to act as a ‘human shield’ for the king if Trump begins to criticize Keir Starmer or the UK, which he has been known to do.” However, government insiders believe that King Charles is capable of handling the situation independently.

“He has decades of experience in such matters, including meetings with some challenging personalities. He reviews all his documents and is well aware of the situation. We believe he will manage well,” another source remarked.

It is anticipated that King Charles may address topics such as environmental issues and support for Ukraine during his speech, which could be interpreted as indirect criticism of the Trump administration, though it is expected he will frame these points broadly without direct attacks.

In a recent interview with CBS News, Trump praised King Charles for proceeding with his visit despite a recent shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “[The King] is a wonderful man, and we are looking forward to this. He is truly fantastic and an impressive representative, and he is brave,” Trump stated.

The British government has high hopes for this visit, especially as relations between the two nations are currently facing significant challenges. Recently, Trump threatened retaliation after Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves publicly criticized his stance on the Iran conflict. Officials are optimistic that a personal meeting with the monarch might help to ease Trump’s rhetoric.

King Charles III's meeting with Donald Trump in Washington will be closed to the press to avoid potential controversies. Scheduled events include a bilateral discussion and a speech before Congress, with British officials expressing hope that the visit will improve strained relations between the two countries.
