Ukraine has shifted from being a mere recipient of military assistance to taking on the role of a security provider within NATO. Ukrainian armed forces are now participating as instructors, sharing their unique experiences in counter-drone operations with NATO allies.
According to military officials, the involvement of Ukrainian troops in NATO exercises has become increasingly common. They often serve as a ‘red team’—simulated adversaries—during drone warfare training sessions. One admiral noted that these exercises have revealed unexpected challenges, as Ukrainian forces have proven to be formidable opponents.
The admiral emphasized that continued collaboration with Ukraine significantly enhances NATO’s defensive capabilities, particularly in countering drone threats. He remarked on Ukraine’s evolving role in the security landscape, highlighting that the nation is moving beyond simply receiving aid.
“Ukraine is making a substantial contribution,” the NATO Military Committee Chairman stated. This contribution is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing conflict, as Ukrainian forces continue to share valuable insights through the Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre (JATEC).
He further illustrated Ukraine’s impact by referencing their previous support during the Gulf War, where they assisted local nations in repelling Iranian air attacks. This historical context underscores Ukraine’s current status as a security provider.
