Chernobyl Disaster Marks 40 Years: A Reflection on the Catastrophe and Ongoing Threats

April 26, 2026, marks the 40th anniversary of the catastrophic explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a disaster that remains one of the most significant in human history. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the tragic event, emphasizing its lasting impact on countless lives.

On that fateful night in 1986, at 1:23 AM, a powerful explosion occurred in the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl plant, leading to extensive destruction and the release of large quantities of radioactive materials. The aftermath saw a fire that spread to the roof of the third reactor, with firefighting efforts continuing until 5 AM. However, it took until May 10 to fully extinguish the fire within the fourth reactor.

The explosion generated a radioactive cloud that affected not only Ukraine but also parts of Belarus, Russia, and numerous European countries, including Sweden, Austria, and Germany. The incident was classified as a Level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), indicating the highest level of danger.

In his remarks, Zelensky highlighted the protective measures taken since the disaster, including the construction of a sarcophagus over the damaged reactor and a subsequent containment structure built with the cooperation of over 40 countries. He stressed the importance of maintaining these structures to prevent further radiation leaks.

However, Zelensky also raised concerns about ongoing threats to the site, particularly due to military actions in the region. He pointed out that drones, including those operated by Russian forces, have posed risks to the containment structures, with a notable incident occurring on February 14, 2025, when a drone struck the new safe confinement. Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assessed that while the incident compromised some safety functions, the main structural integrity remained intact.

As the world reflects on the legacy of Chernobyl, Zelensky urged global leaders to recognize the dangers of nuclear terrorism and the necessity of preventing further military aggression in the area. He concluded by honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in the aftermath of the disaster, emphasizing the importance of remembering the victims of the Chernobyl catastrophe.

The 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster highlights the ongoing impact of the event and the current threats posed by military actions in the region. President Zelensky calls for global awareness and action to prevent nuclear terrorism.
