Ukrainian officials are advocating for a reassessment of the current electricity price caps, citing their restrictive impact on import capabilities from the European Union during significant hours of the day. This call for change arises as the dynamics of European energy markets shift, particularly due to rising gas prices, which directly affect electricity costs and procurement options for Ukraine.
According to a recent analysis, the fluctuations in European pricing observed in March and projections for the upcoming months suggest that existing price caps will increasingly limit electricity imports during many hours. This situation has prompted discussions on the need to adjust these caps to better align with daily demand structures.
Proposals include raising price limits during peak morning and evening hours. Such adjustments are believed to enhance market liquidity and encourage both imports and the development of local energy generation. “This revision should help create appropriate price signals for electricity imports and investments in generation, particularly during peak load hours,” stated a parliamentary representative.
Moreover, the official emphasized that Ukraine is already progressing towards market liberalization as part of its European integration efforts, notably through the recently passed legislation aimed at integrating energy markets.
