Elina Svitolina Advances to Quarterfinals at Stuttgart Open

Elina Svitolina, the world’s seventh-ranked tennis player, secured a decisive victory in the round of 16 at the Stuttgart Open, defeating German player Eva Lys, who has Ukrainian roots. Svitolina lost only one game throughout the match, showcasing her strong form.

Entering the tournament in Stuttgart, Svitolina had recently triumphed over Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa in the Billie Jean King Cup, winning in straight sets. This victory contributed to the Ukrainian team’s advancement to the finals and elevated their ranking to a historic third place.

Competing as the fourth seed, Svitolina began her Stuttgart campaign in the round of 16 against Lys, currently ranked 78th in the world. In the first set, Svitolina dominated, allowing her opponent just one game, finishing with a score of 6-1. The second set saw an even more commanding performance from Svitolina, as she won 6-0. Over the course of the match, she delivered six aces and successfully defended against four break points. The entire match lasted a mere 55 minutes.

The match result was as follows: Eva Lys (Germany) vs. Elina Svitolina (Ukraine, 4) 0:2 (1:6, 0:6).

This victory marks Svitolina’s third career quarterfinal appearance at the Stuttgart Open. It is her first return to this tournament since the 2021 season, where she reached the semifinals before losing to former world number one Ashleigh Barty. In addition to her semifinal appearance in 2021, Svitolina also reached the quarterfinals in 2018.

In the upcoming quarterfinals, Svitolina will face the winner of the match between eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and Czech player Linda Nosková, who are currently ranked 13th and 14th in the WTA standings, respectively.

Elina Svitolina's commanding performance at the Stuttgart Open has propelled her into the quarterfinals, marking her return to the tournament after two years. She will face either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Linda Nosková in her next match.
