European Union to Implement New Border Control System Starting April 10

The European Union is set to launch a new digital border control system on April 10, which will alter the entry and exit procedures for non-EU citizens. This announcement was made by Arianna Podesta, Deputy Chief Spokesperson for the European Commission, during a briefing.

Podesta stated, “Tomorrow, the Entry-Exit System (EES) will be fully operational. The implementation phase is progressing well, and it is already playing a crucial role in enhancing the security of the EU. Ensuring the safety of Europeans is our top priority, and the EES is part of how we achieve this security.”

According to the spokesperson, the EU is establishing one of the most advanced border control IT systems globally through the EES.

“We are already seeing results. In the past five months, over 45 million entries and exits have been recorded. More than 24,000 refusals of entry have been noted, with over 600 individuals identified as security threats to the Union. This clearly indicates that the system is functioning effectively towards its intended purpose,” Podesta added.

When operating correctly, the registration process for entry or exit will take approximately 70 seconds on average.

Podesta emphasized that all member states have expressed their readiness to implement the EES prior to its gradual rollout, which was a legal prerequisite for the system’s launch. However, she acknowledged that some member states are still facing technical challenges.

“We are maintaining close contact with these member states, sharing best practices from those where the system is functioning well. We can confirm that the system includes flexible mechanisms to ensure smooth border movement, especially considering the anticipated increase in traffic during the summer months. There are also backup solutions that member states can rely on if needed,” she stated.

Who Will Be Affected by the New Rules?

The EES will apply to all citizens of non-EU countries.

How Will the New System Operate at the Border?

During their first entry into the Schengen Area, travelers will need to undergo complete registration. The process is as follows:

  • First entry: passport scanning and biometric data collection;
  • Data storage in the system;
  • Subsequent trips: quick verification without the need for re-registration.

The European Union is introducing a new digital border control system on April 10, which will enhance security and streamline entry and exit procedures for non-EU citizens. The system aims to improve efficiency at borders while addressing potential security threats.
