The British government has issued a stern warning to Russia regarding its activities in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly concerning threats to underwater infrastructure. Defense Secretary John Healey stated that the UK is closely monitoring increased Russian naval activity in the northern Atlantic.
Healey highlighted the detection of a Russian Akula-class submarine and two specialized submarines from the Russian Ministry of Defense’s deep-sea research division. He also referenced the sighting of the Russian reconnaissance vessel, Yantar, last November.
According to Healey, these vessels have been directed by President Vladimir Putin to engage in a hybrid warfare strategy against the UK and its allies, specifically targeting critical underwater infrastructure. British military forces are actively tracking these ships and conducting coordinated operations with allies. One of the submarines has already returned to Russia.
Operations involving over 500 British personnel aimed at monitoring Russian submarines have concluded after a month of activity. Healey confirmed that there is currently no evidence of damage to British underwater cables or pipelines caused by Russian submarines. However, he cautioned Moscow against any further hybrid attacks.
“To President Putin, I say: We see you, we see your activities regarding our cables and pipelines, and you must understand that any attempt to damage them will be unacceptable and will have serious consequences,” Healey stated.
In related news, reports indicate that a Russian frigate has been escorting tankers linked to a shadow fleet that has faced UK sanctions, a move the Kremlin has described as “protection against piracy.” Additionally, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has agreed that British armed forces and law enforcement can now intercept vessels that are under British sanctions while transiting through UK waters.
The UK has warned Russia of severe repercussions if it continues to threaten underwater infrastructure in the Atlantic. Defense Secretary John Healey detailed increased Russian naval activity and emphasized ongoing surveillance operations by British forces.
