Ukraine and Syria to Establish Diplomatic Missions

Ukraine and Syria have agreed to open diplomatic missions in Kyiv and Damascus in the near future. This announcement followed a meeting between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hasan al-Shaibani in Damascus on April 5.

During the discussions, Sybiha highlighted the importance of security cooperation between Europe and the Middle East. He stated, “The security of Europe and the Middle East is interconnected. We will continue our joint efforts to achieve lasting peace for our peoples.” The ministers also addressed logistical matters, particularly the development of trade and maritime routes, which hold significant potential for enhancing economic collaboration.

“Food security remains a critical area, and Kyiv is prepared to contribute through initiatives such as ‘Grain from Ukraine’ to support regional stability,” Sybiha noted.

He further emphasized that bilateral trade has increased ninefold since the signing of a joint communiqué restoring diplomatic relations. The ministers also explored opportunities for humanitarian and educational cooperation, referencing the presence of many Syrian students in Ukraine.

“This is a strong foundation that we intend to build upon,” he added.

In September 2025, Ukraine and Syria signed a joint communiqué to restore diplomatic relations. Subsequently, on April 5, 2026, a Ukrainian delegation led by President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Syria, where bilateral talks took place. This was followed by a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, Turkey, and Syria, focusing on security and defense issues, as well as regional developments related to Iran.

Additionally, Zelensky had visited Turkey on April 4, where he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The two leaders discussed new measures to enhance security cooperation between Kyiv and Ankara.

Ukraine and Syria have committed to establishing diplomatic missions in each other's capitals, reflecting a renewed focus on security and economic cooperation. The discussions included trade, food security, and educational exchanges, indicating a strengthening of bilateral relations.
