Armenia Considers Leaving CSTO and EAEU Amid Gas Price Concerns

The Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, announced that Armenia may initiate the process of withdrawing from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) if Russia raises gas prices. This statement was made during a briefing before an extraordinary session of the Civil Contract party on September 18, 2022, in Yerevan.

Simonyan’s comments followed a meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as reported by the Armenian news agency NEWS.am. He indicated that discussions about potential price increases are not new but expressed confidence that such a hike would not occur.

“I don’t think it will come to that, as I also know that there was a very good, productive conversation between the leaders of the countries. I hope the Prime Minister will share which aspects he finds appropriate, but I acknowledge that these discussions are not often made public during meetings between the two nations. Nevertheless, the Prime Minister of Armenia conveyed Armenia’s perspective,” Simonyan stated.

He emphasized that Armenia has not acted against Russia and does not intend to do so in the future, while asserting the importance of protecting its national interests.

Armenia's Speaker of the National Assembly has warned of potential withdrawal from the CSTO and EAEU if Russia increases gas prices, emphasizing the need to safeguard national interests. This statement follows a recent meeting between Armenian and Russian leaders.
