Ukraine Seeks THAAD Missile Defense Systems from US and Middle Eastern Nations

Ukraine is preparing requests to the United States and Middle Eastern countries for the transfer of THAAD missile defense systems, which could enhance its capabilities against aerial threats.

President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for clear security guarantees, stating, “Ukraine must have a clear understanding of security assurances. Everything must be articulated so that Ukrainians can comprehend it.” He noted that Ukraine would soon submit a document addressing its security guarantee concerns.

Zelensky also called for a definitive response from the United States regarding its stance in the event of renewed aggression from Russia. He highlighted that Ukraine maintains an army of 800,000 personnel, but raised questions about funding sources beyond the national budget.

The request for new missile defense systems comes as Ukraine has engaged with representatives from the Middle East and the Gulf region for consultations and expertise. Zelensky expressed interest in anti-ballistic systems available in those countries but not currently in Ukraine.

Specifically, he mentioned the THAAD systems, which are not present in Europe. He stated, “It is crucial for these systems to be in Ukraine. If we had them, the threat from Russian aerial bombs would be significantly reduced.” He estimated that the systems could mitigate threats at least 200 kilometers away, preventing Russian aircraft from approaching Ukrainian territory.

Zelensky concluded by stating that Ukraine would propose its vision for the acquisition of these systems, after which the United States would analyze the proposal and respond accordingly.

THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, is a ground-based missile defense system designed for high-altitude interception of ballistic missiles. The system is equipped with the AN/TPY-2 radar, which features a digital antenna array covering an area of 9.2 square meters and operates in the X-band. Its operational range is reported to extend between 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers, though multiple radars are necessary for comprehensive coverage due to its 120-degree sector.

Information regarding targets can be relayed to THAAD through integrated information-sharing systems, including satellite data.

Ukraine is actively seeking THAAD missile defense systems from the US and Middle Eastern nations to bolster its defense capabilities against aerial threats. President Zelensky has outlined the need for clear security guarantees and funding strategies for the Ukrainian military.
