Ukrainian military officials have confirmed a strategic shift in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where defensive operations have been prioritized over the immediate recapture of Gulyai Pole, a location that has faced significant conflict. This decision, made by Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, aims to optimize resource allocation and improve tactical positioning.
In an interview with Ukrainian Pravda, Dmitro Filatov, commander of the 1st Separate Assault Battalion, explained that the decision to focus on defense rather than attempting to reclaim Gulyai Pole was crucial. He noted that this approach allowed Ukrainian forces to redirect their resources effectively.
“We managed to achieve results in Dnipropetrovsk thanks to the commander’s agreement not to expend resources on recovering Gulyai Pole, which was nearly lost by the end of 2025,” Filatov stated.
Filatov elaborated that by transitioning to a defensive stance, Ukrainian forces could better fortify their positions along the flanks, particularly in the area between Gulyai Pole and Dnipropetrovsk. This region features a series of elevated positions with fortifications that are now being defended.
He addressed previous comments regarding Gulyai Pole being “almost occupied,” clarifying that while the initial plan for the defense had to be adjusted due to resource limitations, the decision was part of a broader strategy. Filatov refrained from disclosing who proposed the maneuver to abandon the immediate recapture of Gulyai Pole in favor of defensive actions.
“Gulyai Pole was not left to its fate; assault formations were regrouped there, and the 5th Assault Brigade along with the 225th Regiment were deployed to the area,” he explained.
Filatov humorously remarked that had additional forces, including two airborne brigades and three assault battalions, been sent to Gulyai Pole, the outcome might have been different. However, he acknowledged the challenges of urban combat, stating that engaging in such battles would likely have resulted in heavy losses without significant tactical gains.
By halting the enemy’s advance in Dnipropetrovsk and restricting their operational capabilities, Ukrainian forces are positioning themselves to stabilize the situation in the region. Filatov expressed confidence that these actions would compel the opposing forces to withdraw and redeploy their units from the Pokrovsk direction, thereby easing pressure on the 1st National Guard Corps and the 7th Air Assault Corps.
Ukrainian military officials have shifted their strategy in the Dnipropetrovsk region, opting for defensive operations over immediate recapture of Gulyai Pole. This decision aims to optimize resources and enhance tactical positioning, ultimately stabilizing the area.
