Ukraine is making significant strides in the development of maritime drones, with plans to introduce systems capable of operating in oceanic conditions and underwater. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the rapid evolution of these technologies, stating, “We have conquered our sea.”
Initially, Ukraine focused on basic kamikaze drones, but has since progressed to more sophisticated models equipped with turrets that can target helicopters. Zelensky noted, “We now have drones that can shoot down Russian fighters from the sea. We have developed boats that carry other drones on board, as well as vessels that can strike land targets from the sea.”
Currently, the Ukrainian government is working on creating more stable drones that can operate effectively for extended periods at sea. Zelensky added, “In the near future, we will have systems capable of functioning even in ocean conditions. We are also actively developing underwater systems.”
Ukraine has positioned itself as a pioneer in the effective use of maritime drones, having been the first nation to deploy them on a large scale against the Russian Black Sea Fleet, significantly altering the balance of power in the Black Sea. A notable instance of this was the attacks by the Security Service of Ukraine’s Sea Baby drones, which successfully targeted two sanctioned oil tankers, KAIRO and VIRAT, linked to Russia’s shadow fleet.
Ukraine is rapidly advancing its maritime drone capabilities, moving from basic kamikaze models to sophisticated systems designed for both aerial and underwater operations. This development marks a significant shift in naval warfare, particularly in the Black Sea region, where Ukraine has effectively utilized these technologies against Russian naval assets.
