Ukrainian Security Services Detain Suspected Russian Agent Planning Attack

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the arrest of an individual accused of espionage, allegedly working on plans for a missile strike against the commander of the Third Army Corps in a combat zone.

According to the agency’s press service, the suspect was apprehended within a military garrison and has been charged under Article 111, Part 2 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to treason committed under martial law. He is currently in custody.

Investigations reveal that the suspect was recruited by Russian intelligence through his ex-wife, who resides in the temporarily occupied territory of the Zaporizhia region. The individual, an operator of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from another brigade, was tasked with missions in the Kharkiv region.

Authorities have established that the suspect attempted to gather information regarding the timing and location of a general’s arrival at his unit’s positions. To collect intelligence, he leveraged his access to official information and sought to discreetly extract classified details from his colleagues.

Additionally, the suspect was allegedly planning to disclose the location of his brigade’s headquarters and training center, which were targeted for a separate attack by enemy forces. The SBU reported that its personnel acted preemptively, uncovering the Russian informant at an early stage of his espionage activities. They systematically documented his contacts with Russian representatives and secured the relevant defense locations.

The Third Army Corps has not commented on this incident. Since March 2025, the corps has been led by Andriy Biletsky, who established the Third Assault Brigade at the onset of the full-scale invasion.

The SBU has detained a suspected Russian agent allegedly planning an attack on a military commander, highlighting ongoing espionage concerns amid the conflict. The investigation revealed the suspect's connections to Russian intelligence and efforts to gather sensitive military information.
