As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the Ukrainian General Staff has reported that Russia has lost approximately 1,276,760 military personnel since the onset of the war, with 780 casualties reported in just the last day. This data was released on March 12.
In addition to personnel losses, the Ukrainian military has detailed significant losses in Russian military equipment:
- 11,766 tanks (up by 3 in the last day)
- 24,197 armored fighting vehicles (up by 20)
- 38,319 artillery systems (up by 56)
- 1,681 multiple rocket launchers (up by 1)
- 1,329 air defense systems (up by 1)
- 435 aircraft
- 349 helicopters
- 173,086 tactical drones (up by 2,120)
- 4,403 cruise missiles
- 31 ships or boats
- 2 submarines
- 83,034 vehicles and fuel tankers (up by 243)
- 4,088 units of special equipment
While these figures are substantial, Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses. The last public statement from Moscow regarding troop fatalities was made in September 2022, when they reported 5,937 deaths.
In contrast, independent Russian media, including Meduza and the BBC Russian Service, along with volunteer groups, have identified over 200,000 Russian military personnel who have died in the conflict since February 2022, based on publicly available information. However, these lists are incomplete, as not all casualties are reported publicly.
International assessments of total Russian losses, including both killed and wounded, are significantly higher. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, indicated that the alliance estimated the total number of Russian military personnel killed and injured could approach 1.15 million. The official noted that average daily losses for Russia in November were around 1,100 personnel.
On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky has been cautious in releasing casualty figures, stating that comprehensive data would be made available after the war. However, he has periodically updated these figures, most recently revealing in early February 2026 that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since the conflict began, with many others classified as missing.
Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on January 13 that efforts in 2025 had led to a 13% reduction in personnel losses, although no specific numbers were provided.
The Ukrainian military has reported substantial Russian losses, including over 1.27 million troops and significant equipment casualties. Independent sources suggest even higher figures, while Ukraine's own losses remain cautiously disclosed by officials.
