Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has conferred the rank of brigadier general upon Denys Prokopenko, the commander of the National Guard’s Azov Regiment. This decision was formalized in a decree issued on February 25, 2026.
Prokopenko’s military career has been marked by significant challenges, including his capture by Russian forces in May 2022. This occurred following an order from his superiors to evacuate the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, where he and over two thousand other Ukrainian soldiers had been defending against a prolonged siege.
During his captivity, Prokopenko and his fellow soldiers faced harsh conditions, as they were among the last defenders of Mariupol. The situation drew international attention, highlighting the plight of Ukrainian troops during the ongoing conflict.
In September 2022, a prisoner exchange allowed Prokopenko to return to Ukraine, along with a number of other defenders. This exchange was part of broader efforts to secure the release of captured soldiers, which has been a critical aspect of the conflict.
Recently, in August 2023, the Azov special operations brigade re-entered the frontline, indicating a renewed commitment to their military objectives. Prokopenko’s promotion reflects both his leadership and the ongoing significance of the Azov Regiment in Ukraine’s defense strategy.
President Zelensky has promoted Denys Prokopenko to brigadier general, recognizing his leadership and resilience during the conflict. Prokopenko's journey includes his capture and subsequent return to service, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian forces.
