Following a deadly attack in Lviv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered a review of security protocols to prevent future incidents. The attack, which occurred on February 22, resulted in the death of a police officer and injuries to 25 others, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement.
In a video address, Zelensky described the incident as a “cynical and brutal” act of terrorism. He reported that two explosions took place, the second occurring as emergency services arrived on the scene. The president extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer, who was just 23 years old.
All injured individuals are receiving necessary medical treatment, with some in critical condition. Zelensky emphasized the need for a coordinated effort among communities, local leaders, and government institutions to enhance preventative measures against such attacks.
“Our law enforcement agencies have significant experience in countering these incidents, and dozens of similar threats have already been successfully neutralized,” Zelensky stated.
He revealed that the attackers were recruited via Telegram and that the operation was orchestrated by Russian forces. The circumstances surrounding the attack are currently under thorough investigation.
“The details of this attack are being fully analyzed. We already have many facts. The perpetrators were recruited through Telegram, and the organization behind this act is Russian,” he added.
Zelensky reiterated the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian authorities to combat recruitment for such attacks, stressing the importance of community involvement in thwarting future threats. He warned that intelligence indicates further plans by Russian operatives to carry out similar attacks.
“We have intelligence data indicating that Russians intend to continue these types of attacks against Ukrainians. We need to provide more protection for our people,” he said.
Details about the Lviv attack reveal that it occurred after police responded to reports of suspicious activity involving two men damaging property. The explosions happened shortly after police arrived on the scene.
“The police received a call about two unidentified men in dark clothing who had broken into a local store. After police arrived, the explosions occurred,” the Security Service of Ukraine reported.
Among the injured were both law enforcement personnel and civilians. Authorities later arrested a 33-year-old woman suspected of carrying out the bombings, who reportedly manufactured the explosive devices under the direction of Russian intelligence.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosives were hidden in trash bins, with surveillance footage capturing the moment they were placed. As of the evening of February 22, 12 individuals remained hospitalized, two of whom were reported to be in critical condition.
The suspect has been charged with committing a terrorist act that resulted in death and illegal handling of weapons under Ukrainian law.
