The U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, has claimed that China plays a crucial role in bolstering Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. He suggested that a single phone call from Beijing could potentially end the conflict.
Whitaker stated, “China could call Vladimir Putin and end this war tomorrow, as well as halt the sale of dual-use technologies.” He emphasized that the ongoing war is significantly enabled by China’s support.
According to Bloomberg, since the onset of the war, China and Russia have strengthened their partnership, with Russia increasingly relying on China for essential components and supplies for drones and other military equipment.
China has also emerged as the largest buyer of Russian crude oil, despite growing international pressure on this vital trade for Moscow. Monitoring data revealed that in January, Chinese ports received an average of 1.65 million barrels of oil per day, marking the highest level since March 2024 and the second-largest monthly total since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Despite these ties, Beijing has repeatedly expressed a desire to play a “constructive” role in resolving the crisis. This week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, in Munich, offering humanitarian assistance to Ukraine amid ongoing Russian assaults.
U.S. NATO Ambassador Matthew Whitaker has accused China of significantly supporting Russia's aggression in Ukraine, suggesting that Beijing could easily intervene to end the conflict. Meanwhile, China continues to strengthen its economic ties with Russia, particularly in oil purchases, while also expressing a desire to assist Ukraine humanitarianly.
