Ukrainian Family Transforms Rural Life After Leaving Kyiv

Two years ago, a family from Kyiv made the significant decision to leave city life behind and purchased a house in a village for just $2,000. Kateryna Synko shared their journey on her YouTube channel, detailing how their property has evolved during this time.

The family deliberately chose an older home that lacks modern amenities such as running water and central heating. Their aim was to establish a more self-sufficient lifestyle.

Kateryna emphasized that their move was not about romanticizing rural life but about creating an independent existence with reliable electricity and water supply.

Currently, the family is cultivating a small farm, focusing on viticulture and producing artisanal goods. They grow a variety of crops, including berries and vegetables, and have set up compost zones and experimental garden beds.

Among their crops are chamomile, blackberries, strawberries, corn, cabbage, peas, beets, carrots, and various herbs. They have implemented raised beds and are utilizing cover crops, compost, and organic methods to minimize chemical use.

The family has also planted grapevines, with some seedlings successfully surviving the winter and beginning to sprout new shoots after the spring frosts. They plan to plant over 200 additional grapevines on another part of their land.

Despite facing ongoing challenges and experiments, Kateryna noted that they are continuously learning to work with the land, gradually building a farm that can sustain their family with homegrown produce.

Reviving Old Village Homes

Previously, reports highlighted an interior and landscape designer from Odesa who transformed a century-old house into a livable space. Having purchased the property 15 years ago, she renovated the old sections and added new rooms, creating a green oasis around her home.

Additionally, Alina Petrenko and her family bought an old house in Dnipropetrovsk for $8,000 at the beginning of 2025. She shared the challenges they faced in the year following the purchase, addressing criticisms regarding the price, which some deemed excessive.
