Ukrainian Authorities Issue New Charges Against Ex-MP Yevhen Murayev

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced new charges against Yevhen Murayev, a former member of parliament and leader of the banned pro-Kremlin party “Our”. Murayev is accused of justifying and denying Russian aggression against Ukraine.

According to the SBU, evidence has emerged indicating that Murayev continued to disseminate pro-Kremlin propaganda following the onset of the full-scale war. While in hiding abroad, he reportedly described the Russian military actions as a “domestic civil conflict” in an interview, while also spreading misinformation about the situation in Ukraine.

“He urged citizens to lay down their arms in the face of Russian forces and justified the temporary occupation of parts of Ukrainian territory,” the SBU stated.

Prior to the ban on Murayev’s affiliated television channel, he extensively utilized media resources to promote disinformation regarding Ukraine’s socio-political landscape in favor of Russia. The SBU confirmed that an expert analysis initiated by them validated the claims of Murayev’s information warfare activities supporting the aggressor state.

Based on the gathered evidence, investigators have formally charged Murayev in absentia under Article 436-2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which addresses the justification and denial of Russian military aggression, as well as the glorification of its participants.

Efforts to hold Murayev accountable are ongoing. He is currently wanted for treason and incitement of national hatred and enmity.

Murayev faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison, along with asset confiscation.

Background on Murayev’s Case

Murayev fled Ukraine in May 2022 and is believed to be living with his family in Vienna, with occasional trips to Bratislava for business. Prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there were reports suggesting that he could assume leadership of a Russian occupation administration in Ukraine. In July 2023, he was previously charged with treason.

Yevhen Murayev, a former Ukrainian MP, faces new charges from the SBU for justifying Russian aggression and spreading disinformation. Currently in hiding, he is wanted for treason and could face significant prison time.
