Approximately 8 million Ukrainians are currently living abroad, prompting the Ukrainian government to explore ways to encourage their return. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha addressed this issue during a session in the Verkhovna Rada, emphasizing the need for strategic measures to facilitate their repatriation.
Sybiha stated, “This is becoming a security challenge for us. We are clear that necessary steps will be taken to create conditions for Ukrainians to come back home. Ensuring safety in Ukraine is our primary goal.” He noted that discussions are ongoing with international partners regarding this initiative.
However, Sybiha acknowledged that not all countries are eager to see Ukrainians return. He pointed out the significant contributions made by Ukrainian citizens to the economies of their host countries, highlighting their skills and adaptability as key factors in their integration abroad. “We will essentially need to compete for these individuals to encourage their return,” he added.
Notably, Switzerland has already implemented a program aimed at facilitating the return of its Ukrainian residents. This initiative provides financial assistance for travel and temporary housing upon their return to Ukraine, indicating that the process has begun.
Efforts to Support Returnees
