Ukraine Completes Major Road Repairs Following Harsh Winter

Ukraine has successfully wrapped up significant road restoration efforts on its national highways, as announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. This update was shared via her Telegram channel, highlighting the completion of essential repairs aimed at addressing winter damage.

Svyrydenko indicated that the primary focus has been on national and international routes, where repairs have eliminated potholes and other winter-related deformities. This year alone, approximately 14 million square meters of road surface have been restored, marking the highest achievement since the onset of the full-scale invasion.

Looking ahead, the government plans to direct further restoration efforts towards frontline regions, particularly on roads crucial for military logistics and evacuation. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba added that substantial work has been completed on key transport corridors, including:

  • M-06 Kyiv – Chop;
  • M-05 Kyiv – Odesa;
  • M-14 Odesa – Melitopol – Novoazovsk;
  • M-29 Kharkiv – Krasnohrad – Pereshchepyn – Dnipro;
  • M-21 Vystupovichi – Zhytomyr – Mohyliv-Podilskyi.

On May 1, Svyrydenko confirmed that major roadwork on international routes had been finalized, with repairs commencing in February. Earlier, Serhiy Sukhomlyn, head of the State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure, noted that unlike in Ukraine, European countries typically replace the top layer of asphalt every five years, regardless of its condition. This practice contributes to the superior quality of roads in Europe compared to those in Ukraine.

In February, it was reported that Ukraine faces a critical shortage of funds for road repairs, with the lack of a dedicated Road Fund being a major barrier to infrastructure recovery and attracting investments.

Ukraine has completed significant road repairs on national highways, focusing on addressing winter damage. Future efforts will target frontline areas to support military logistics.
