The United States Embassy in Russia has issued a safety advisory for American citizens following recent drone strikes targeting locations within the country. The advisory emphasizes the importance of seeking shelter during such incidents.
According to the embassy’s guidance, which was published on June 18, there have been reports of drone attacks and explosions in border areas near Ukraine and in major cities further inland. The advisory instructs citizens to follow local authorities’ directives in emergencies and to seek cover if they observe a drone.
“In the event of an emergency, follow the instructions of local Russian authorities and seek shelter. If you see a drone, move away immediately and seek cover if necessary. Do not approach, touch, or photograph drones, their debris, or objects dropped from them,” the advisory states.
The embassy also reminded citizens that sharing images or videos of the aftermath of strikes is prohibited in Russia and could result in criminal charges. Additionally, the embassy reiterated its recommendation against travel to Russia for American citizens.
In related developments, on the night of June 18, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck the Moscow oil refinery in Kapotnya, resulting in a significant fire at the facility. Russian media have described this attack as the most extensive in the past two years, with residents in some areas of Moscow reporting a phenomenon referred to as “oil rain.”
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda characterized the drone strike as a pivotal factor that could shift the dynamics of the war in favor of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Estonia’s Foreign Minister shared a striking image on social media capturing the moment a lid was blown off an affected oil tank, calling it the “photo of the day.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the strikes, asserting that pressure to end the war should not only come from Ukrainians but also from Americans, Europeans, and the Russian populace.
