The Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Kyiv has ordered Nestor Shufrych, a member of the Ukrainian parliament from the banned Opposition Platform — For Life party, to be placed under round-the-clock house arrest. This decision comes as he faces serious allegations of treason.
According to Shufrych’s lawyer, Valeriy Bunyak, the court’s ruling mandates that Shufrych remain at his registered address in Kyiv Oblast, except when seeking medical assistance or during air raid alerts. He is required to wear an electronic monitoring device, surrender all documents for international travel, report to court and investigators as needed, and refrain from contacting witnesses in the case.
Previously, on March 11, the court extended Shufrych’s detention until May 9. The ongoing legal proceedings against him stem from accusations announced by the Office of the Prosecutor General on September 3, 2023, which involved Shufrych and his former aide, Vyacheslav Cherepani.
They are charged under Article 110-2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code for financing actions aimed at violently overthrowing the constitutional order and seizing state power, as well as altering the borders of Ukraine. Additionally, Shufrych faces charges of treason under Article 111.
Investigators allege that following the temporary occupation of Crimea, Shufrych and associates facilitated the registration of property in the settlement of Simeiz under Russian law. This property was reportedly acquired in 2013 through a controlled enterprise and trusted individuals.
In 2016, to protect this property, the accused allegedly arranged a security contract with an illegal paramilitary group associated with the Russian National Guard in Crimea. They are accused of transferring over 648,700 Russian rubles to this group for security services, despite its involvement in the conflict against Ukraine.
Furthermore, Shufrych is suspected of being recruited by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and carrying out tasks for a former deputy secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council who relocated to Moscow in 2014. Investigators assert that Shufrych has consistently promoted narratives favorable to the aggressor state in his public appearances and interviews, advocating for pro-Russian ideologies regarding Ukraine’s future.
Both Shufrych and Cherepani deny the charges, with Shufrych asserting that his actions do not constitute treason.
Nestor Shufrych, a Ukrainian MP from the banned Opposition Platform — For Life party, has been placed under house arrest as he faces charges of treason and financing anti-state activities. The court ruling restricts his movements while the investigation continues.
