Ukrainian Culture Minister Advocates for Ivan Mazepa Monument in Kyiv

The Ukrainian Minister of Culture, Tetiana Berezhna, has expressed her support for the establishment of a monument honoring Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv. In an interview with Radio Liberty, she emphasized the significance of Mazepa as a historical figure and a major patron of the arts in Ukraine.

Berezhna stated, “Ivan Mazepa is an immensely important figure in Ukrainian history. Fortunately, there has been a recent reevaluation of his legacy. The creation of a monument to such a significant person is a complex issue that requires discussion within the cultural community and at the political level. We are working to ensure that he is appropriately commemorated.”

She further affirmed her personal backing for the project, saying, “I certainly support the idea of having such a monument in Kyiv. We are actively working on this.”

Currently, Kyiv features a statue of Bohdan Khmelnytsky on Sofiivska Square, erected in the late 19th century. Additionally, a monument to the exiled Hetman Pylyp Orlyk was unveiled during Ukraine’s independence celebrations, marking the 300th anniversary of his constitution. There is also a statue of Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny located in the Podil district of the city.

While a full monument to Mazepa exists only in Poltava, several towns, including Chernihiv, have busts dedicated to him.

For several years, discussions have stalled regarding the installation of a bust of Mazepa near the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv’s Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, despite the bust already being produced.

Historically, Russia has sought to tarnish Mazepa’s reputation, particularly due to his alliance with Swedish King Charles XII, which aimed to establish an independent Ukrainian state. This ambition was thwarted by their defeat at the Battle of Poltava in 1709. In Russia, Mazepa is often labeled a “traitor.”

Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna has voiced her support for a monument to Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv, recognizing his historical significance. While discussions continue, the initiative reflects a broader effort to honor Ukraine's past amidst ongoing cultural debates.
