On the night of April 29, Russian forces launched an extensive drone attack on Ukraine, deploying a total of 171 strike drones, including approximately 120 Shahed models, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
Preliminary reports indicate that by 08:00, Ukrainian air defenses had intercepted or neutralized 154 enemy drones, including types such as Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas, across northern, southern, and eastern regions of the country.
The Air Force noted that 12 strike drones successfully hit 10 locations, with debris falling in 12 areas. Military officials have warned that the attacks are ongoing.
Russian military operations have increasingly targeted Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure using various weapons, including strike drones, missiles, and multiple rocket launch systems.
Ukrainian authorities, along with international organizations, have classified these strikes as war crimes committed by the Russian Federation, emphasizing their deliberate nature.
Attacks on essential services and healthcare facilities aimed at depriving civilians of electricity, heat, water, communication, and medical assistance have been described as indicative of genocidal actions. Legal experts and human rights advocates assert that Russia’s actions during the ongoing conflict may fall under the definition of genocide.
Key indicators of such actions include public declarations from Russian officials denying the existence of Ukrainians as an ethnic group and calls for their destruction, as well as targeted assaults on vital infrastructure.
The 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide obligates signatory states to prevent and punish acts of genocide in both wartime and peacetime. Currently, 149 countries are parties to this convention.
According to the convention, genocide is defined as actions aimed at the complete or partial destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Indicators of genocide include the killing of group members, inflicting serious bodily harm, and creating conditions intended to destroy the group.
Russian leadership has consistently denied that its military conducts targeted strikes against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, asserting that such claims are unfounded.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported a significant drone attack by Russian forces, marking an escalation in hostilities. The ongoing strikes have raised concerns over potential war crimes as international bodies classify these actions as deliberate assaults on civilian infrastructure.
