Ukraine to Begin Partial Military Discharges This Fall

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that a process for the partial discharge of military personnel will commence at the end of this year. This initiative will affect those who have served since 2022 or earlier, with presidential decrees taking precedence over existing contracts.

Fedorov explained that the discharges will be based on two primary criteria: the total length of service since 2014 and the number of combat days served. He emphasized that while many soldiers are eligible for discharge, a sudden release of all personnel from the front lines would jeopardize military operations.

“These individuals are the backbone of our army. However, they should not remain captives of the system. This initial phase of transformation aims to provide them with hope, financial support, and a pathway to discharge,” Fedorov stated.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces will oversee the discharge process, utilizing data on service duration and combat days. A specialized calculator is being developed to allow each service member to estimate their potential discharge month.

The number of soldiers discharged each month will depend on battlefield conditions and any mobilization actions by the enemy. Those discharged will receive a six-month deferment from re-enlistment, with each day of active combat adding an additional day to this deferment period.

Fedorov added, “If you have been serving since 2022 and hear about the upcoming discharge process, you may consider signing a 24-month contract. However, if you qualify for discharge in November or December, the presidential decree will take precedence over your contract.”

Ukraine's Defense Minister has outlined a plan for partial military discharges starting this fall, prioritizing soldiers based on their service duration and combat experience. The initiative aims to balance military needs with the welfare of personnel.
