In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukrainian military forces reported that Russian troops launched an assault involving 90 strike drones on the night of June 19. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that as of 08:30, they had successfully intercepted or neutralized 79 enemy drones, including various models such as Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and Bandero, across multiple regions of the country.
Despite these defensive measures, nine strike drones managed to hit eight different locations, with debris falling in several areas. The Ukrainian military has warned that the attack is ongoing, with additional Russian drones still present in the airspace.
Russian forces have been persistently targeting Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using a range of weaponry, including strike drones, missiles, and artillery systems. These attacks are viewed by both Ukrainian authorities and international organizations as war crimes, characterized by their deliberate nature.
Officials have condemned the strikes on essential services and healthcare facilities, arguing that such actions aim to deprive civilians of electricity, heating, water supply, communication, and medical assistance, which they consider indicative of genocidal behavior. Legal experts and human rights advocates assert that Russia’s actions may constitute various forms of genocide against the Ukrainian population.
Key indicators of genocide include public declarations of intent to eliminate Ukrainians, systematic targeting of vital infrastructure, and the persecution of pro-Ukrainian individuals in occupied territories. Furthermore, the Russian government has faced accusations of attempting to erase Ukrainian cultural identity through educational reforms and the removal of Ukrainian literature and artifacts.
The 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide obligates its 149 signatory states to prevent and punish acts of genocide during both wartime and peacetime. The convention defines genocide as actions intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.
Despite these serious allegations, Russian leadership continues to deny that its military is deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, asserting that the operations are aimed at military objectives.
Ukrainian forces reported significant drone attacks from Russia, with high interception rates but some drones successfully striking civilian areas. The ongoing assaults have drawn international condemnation, with accusations of war crimes and genocidal actions against the Ukrainian population.
