Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that preparations are underway for a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Márki-Zay. The specific date and location of the meeting will be determined through diplomatic channels, contingent on the progress of ongoing negotiations.
During a press briefing, Sybiha noted that the first round of consultations between Ukrainian and Hungarian representatives had already taken place, lasting over six hours.
“Progress has been made. I see a willingness to listen to each other and jointly open a new chapter in our bilateral relations,”
Sybiha stated. He added that further negotiations are being organized to address bilateral relations and sensitive issues, including the rights of the Hungarian minority, which Hungary seeks to strengthen. Additionally, Ukraine is collaborating with Hungary to initiate discussions regarding EU membership negotiation clusters. The timing of the leaders’ meeting will depend on the advancements made by the negotiation teams.
“We expect the clusters to be formally opened in June. This is our firm position. I believe we have the support of our European partners. It is crucial for this to happen, as it concerns not only Ukraine but also the interests of Europe,”
Sybiha emphasized.
Ukrainian officials are preparing for a significant diplomatic meeting with Hungary, focusing on bilateral relations and EU membership discussions. The outcome of these talks will influence the timing of the leaders' meeting.
