U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has voiced concerns regarding the intensification of Russian operations against the Baltic states, expressing apprehension that these actions could escalate into a broader conflict. Rubio made these remarks during a press briefing in Sweden on May 22.
In response to a journalist’s inquiry about the increasing Russian campaign targeting the Baltic nations, Rubio stated that Washington is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with NATO allies. He emphasized the importance of vigilance in light of the perceived threats faced by these countries.
“This is troubling. You always worry about escalation. We understand that these countries feel threatened — for obvious reasons,” Rubio remarked.
Rubio further indicated that the potential for escalation is a constant concern, and he reassured that the U.S. is paying close attention to developments in the region.
“We are concerned about this because we do not want it to lead to any broader conflict that could really turn into something much worse,” he added.
Drone Incidents in the Baltic States
On March 23, a drone, believed to have originated from Belarus, entered Lithuanian airspace and exploded over Lake Lavisas, situated more than 20 kilometers from the border. Lithuanian radar systems did not detect the drone.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Defence speculated that the drone was Ukrainian, likely diverted from its intended target in Russia due to electronic warfare measures.
Subsequently, Lithuania’s Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė confirmed that the drone was indeed Ukrainian, presumably one that was aimed at targets near Primorsk, close to St. Petersburg.
On March 25, an unidentified drone that had entered Latvia from Russia crashed and exploded, as reported by Latvian military officials. Additionally, in Estonia, a drone that had strayed off course collided with a smoke stack at a power plant in Auvere on the same night.
Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur stated that the incidents involving drones in the Baltic states are linked to Russian aggression against Ukraine and are not attributable to Kyiv. He noted that these events occurred against the backdrop of attacks on Russian ports.
On May 19, Pevkur reported that air defense forces successfully intercepted a drone that had entered Estonian airspace, shooting it down over Lake Vörtsjärv in the southern part of the country. He suggested that this drone was likely of Ukrainian origin and was heading towards targets in Russia.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued an apology for the incident involving the drone that breached Estonian airspace on May 19, asserting that such occurrences are unintentional and stem from Russian actions that redirect Ukrainian drones towards the Baltic states.
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service accused Latvia of allegedly permitting the launch of Ukrainian drones from its territory aimed at Russian targets. In response, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry dismissed these claims as false, with Latvian authorities also labeling them as “lies.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has raised alarms about escalating Russian activities in the Baltic region, coinciding with recent drone incidents involving Ukrainian and Russian forces. Both the U.S. and Baltic states are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
