U.S. Secretary of State Expresses Concern Over Russian Disinformation Campaign in the Baltic Region

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has voiced apprehensions regarding a Russian disinformation campaign related to airspace violations in the Baltic states. His comments came during a press briefing following a NATO ministerial meeting in Sweden.

Rubio highlighted the potential risks associated with the situation, stating, “There are always concerns about escalation, and this certainly raises alarms. We understand that these countries feel threatened for obvious reasons, which adds to our concern that such incidents could escalate into something more serious.”

The Secretary emphasized that Washington is closely monitoring developments and is prepared to collaborate with NATO allies as the situation evolves. He remarked, “We are keeping an eye on events. The main response to your question is that we are worried about this, as we do not want it to lead to a broader conflict that could result in far worse outcomes.”

On Friday, foreign ministers from Northern European and Baltic countries issued a joint statement condemning the disinformation efforts by Russia and Belarus concerning drone incidents in the region. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna accused Russia of intentionally directing Ukrainian drones into NATO airspace in an attempt to undermine support for Ukraine.

Earlier, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell criticized Russian threats toward the Baltic nations, labeling Moscow’s accusations as “complete nonsense” and indicative of its own weaknesses.
