At the outset of their discussions, Xi emphasized the importance of partnership over rivalry, stating that both nations would benefit from collaboration and suffer from confrontation. He remarked,
“Both countries will win from cooperation and lose from confrontation.”
Xi expressed his pleasure at Trump’s visit, noting that the world is currently at a pivotal juncture. He indicated his eagerness to exchange views with the U.S. president on critical issues affecting both countries.
In response, Trump referred to Xi as a “great leader”, affirming his commitment to honesty in their interactions. He stated,
“You are a great leader. I say this to everyone. Sometimes people don’t like it when I say this, but it’s true. It is an honor for me to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the U.S. will become better than ever before.”
Trump arrived in Beijing on May 13, accompanied by over a dozen executives from major American companies, including Tim Cook of Apple, Elon Musk of Tesla, and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. This visit underscores the ongoing economic ties and mutual interests between the two nations.
