U.S. Official to Attend St. Petersburg Economic Forum Amid Political Tensions

For the first time in several years, a U.S. official is set to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia. Rodney Mims Cook, the head of the U.S. Federal Commission on the Arts, has confirmed his participation in the event scheduled for June 3-6, 2025.

Cook stated, as reported by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, that both the forum’s organizing committee and the U.S. State Department have verified his invitation to the plenary session, which will include remarks from President Vladimir Putin. His attendance marks a significant moment as it represents a rare engagement of an American official at this forum in recent years.

In addition to Cook, reports indicate that Fernand Kartheiser, a Member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg, is also planning to attend the forum. Kartheiser has previously expressed his intention to invite other colleagues to join him. His last visit to Moscow, approximately a year ago, was focused on discussions surrounding peace and human rights, but it resulted in his expulsion from the European Conservatives and Reformists group.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, an annual event that attracts global leaders and business figures, serves as a platform for discussions on economic development and international cooperation. The upcoming forum is expected to draw attention amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The upcoming St. Petersburg International Economic Forum will see the attendance of U.S. official Rodney Mims Cook, marking a rare instance of American participation. Additionally, European Parliament member Fernand Kartheiser is expected to join, highlighting ongoing international engagement despite strained relations.
