U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has reiterated the United States’ commitment to assist Ukraine in its defense against increasing Russian aggression. His remarks came during the Asian Security Summit in Singapore, where he addressed concerns raised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding a shortage of air defense systems.
In response to inquiries about Zelensky’s recent letter highlighting the urgent need for military support, Austin stated that the U.S. is actively exploring ways to enhance its assistance. He emphasized that the U.S. is adapting its production capabilities to ensure a significant increase in the supply of critical military equipment.
“We are changing the way we produce all of these important munitions to ensure that our companies are supplying not just a little bit more, but a lot more across the board. Where we can help Ukraine, we are doing that; where we can enable Europe to do more, we are doing that,” Austin said.
Austin also acknowledged the heightened support from European allies, noting their increased financial commitments to Ukraine’s defense. He expressed admiration for Europe’s dedication to the cause, stating that the continent has become more active in its support, while Ukraine has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in utilizing the assistance provided.
“I am inspired by European commitment. If you look at the amount of money being spent, Europe has stepped up, and Ukraine has been no less, if not more effective in this process. So we want them to be able to defend themselves, and we will find a way to provide them with assistance,” he added.
This discussion follows Zelensky’s letter to U.S. President Donald Trump and members of Congress, in which he emphasized Ukraine’s reliance on U.S. support for protection against Russian ballistic missiles. He also reported that during a significant attack on May 24, Russia deployed two medium-range ballistic missiles, known as “Oreshnik.”
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has indicated that the U.S. will respond to Zelensky’s letter regarding the air defense shortfall, highlighting ongoing concerns about Ukraine’s military needs in the face of escalating threats.
