Trump Seeks Support for Ukraine in Exchange for G7 Assistance in Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly prepared to bolster support for Ukraine while increasing pressure on Russia, contingent upon assistance from European allies in demining the Strait of Hormuz. This information emerges from discussions involving five European diplomats and officials, as reported by Politico.

The proposed arrangement appears to be taking shape, with Trump aiming to stabilize a ceasefire framework with Iran. To achieve this, he seeks military capabilities from G7 allies to clear mines from the strategic waterway. In return, European leaders expect Trump to reinforce support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed cautious optimism following the discussions, stating, “The conversations we have had among ourselves and with the U.S. president—both in formal meetings and informal contacts—give me a certain sense of optimism.” This sentiment follows earlier concerns in Europe that Trump might pressure Ukraine into territorial concessions, particularly after a lengthy phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During recent meetings, Trump unexpectedly indicated that the U.S. is prepared to reimpose stringent sanctions on the Russian oil sector. He stated, “Russia must reach an agreement.” G7 leaders have conveyed their willingness to assist with the demining process, but under specific conditions. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that any deployment of ships would require an official request from the U.S. and agreement from all involved parties, including Iran and Oman.

In related developments, during the G7 summit in Évian on June 16, leaders agreed to intensify pressure on Russia by implementing new sanctions on oil and gas exports, aimed at cutting off funding sources for Moscow’s military actions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that all G7 nations perceive a lack of willingness from Russia to conclude the conflict.

Trump also indicated at the summit that he would not extend exemptions from sanctions on Russian oil that had been put in place in response to rising global prices exacerbated by the conflict in Iran. Chancellor Merz expressed optimism regarding the alignment between European leaders and the U.S. president on the war in Ukraine.

President Trump is negotiating increased support for Ukraine in exchange for European assistance in demining the Strait of Hormuz. This potential agreement reflects ongoing discussions among G7 leaders about sanctions and military cooperation in response to Russian actions.
