In a recent speech at the Turning Point Action event in Arizona, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed strong criticism of NATO, accusing the alliance of failing to support the United States and Israel in their military actions against Iran.
During his remarks, Trump stated that NATO had proven to be “absolutely ineffective” when needed most, prompting boos from the audience. He likened NATO’s response to that of an individual attempting to make a campaign donation after his electoral victory, asserting that such contributions were not considered valid.
“Listen, to make it clear: campaign donations after my victory do not count, they do not count. NATO, after our victory, also does not count; it is the same,” Trump remarked.
Additionally, Trump reiterated his characterization of the conflict with Iran as merely a “military excursion,” downplaying its significance. He stated, “This was just a military excursion. It is not the most important thing. It is not the most significant event.”
The former president has consistently criticized NATO for its lack of involvement in efforts to secure shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. On April 17, Trump dismissed any proposals for NATO assistance regarding the Strait.
Trump has previously indicated that he is seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the necessity of NATO membership would be reassessed following the conclusion of the conflict in Iran.
