In a recent statement, U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the need for Iran’s enriched uranium to be either destroyed or immediately handed over to the United States. This announcement was made via his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump stated, “Enriched uranium (nuclear dust!) will either be immediately transferred to the United States for destruction, or, preferably, destroyed on-site in cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He also indicated that the process should be monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or a similar organization.
Prior to this declaration, Trump reiterated that the U.S. would not rush into an agreement with Iran, maintaining that American sanctions on Iranian ports would remain fully enforced until a satisfactory deal is reached.
According to Axios, the U.S. and Iran are reportedly nearing a memorandum that would extend a ceasefire for 60 days. During this period, the Strait of Hormuz is expected to reopen, allowing both parties to engage in discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The proposed agreement includes commitments from Tehran to never pursue nuclear weapons, to negotiate a halt to its nuclear activities, and to export its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
However, it has been reported that Iran has not agreed to transfer its enriched uranium as part of the memorandum. Sources from Al Arabiya indicate that Iran is willing to export its enriched uranium, provided it is sent to China.
President Trump has called for the destruction or transfer of Iran's enriched uranium, emphasizing U.S. sanctions will remain until a deal is reached. Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are ongoing, with Iran expressing conditions for its uranium stockpile.
