Thailand to Reduce Visa-Free Stay for Tourists Amid Crime Concerns

The Thai government has announced a significant reduction in the duration of visa-free stays for tourists from over 90 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and several nations in the Schengen Area. This decision is part of a broader effort to address rising concerns related to foreign criminal activity.

Previously, travelers from these countries could stay in Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days. However, as of May 20, the government has approved a new policy that will limit this duration to a maximum of 30 days for most visitors. In certain cases, the stay may be reduced to just 15 days, according to Tourism Minister Surasak Phanchareonwong.

Tourists will have the option to extend their stay once by applying at an immigration office. A government spokesperson informed AFP that the decision to grant an extension will be at the discretion of immigration officers, who will require tourists to justify their request for a longer stay.

“The decision on extensions will be made by an officer, and tourists will need to explain why they wish to remain longer,” the spokesperson stated.

Minister Phanchareonwong clarified that the initiative is not aimed at any specific country but is focused on individuals who exploit the visa system to engage in criminal activities within Thailand. Recent reports indicate an uptick in arrests of tourists linked to drug offenses, human trafficking, and unlicensed business operations, including hotels and educational institutions.

The changes reflect Thailand’s ongoing efforts to maintain its reputation as a safe destination while managing the complexities associated with international tourism and security.

Thailand's government has approved a reduction in visa-free stay durations for tourists from over 90 countries, aiming to combat rising foreign criminal activity. The new policy allows for stays of up to 30 days, with some visitors limited to just 15 days, as authorities seek to enhance security measures.
