A shooting incident in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv has resulted in the deaths of six individuals, with authorities confirming that the assailant has been neutralized. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the attacker, who was originally from Russia, had a criminal history and had been living in Donetsk.
According to Zelensky, the attacker held hostages and fatally shot one of them. Four additional victims were killed on the street, and another woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. The president expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and noted that four hostages were successfully rescued.
As of now, 14 people have been reported injured, including a 12-year-old boy who is receiving medical care. Zelensky revealed that prior to the shooting, the assailant had set fire to an apartment before taking to the streets with a weapon.
Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) are currently probing the circumstances surrounding the attack. Zelensky emphasized the importance of thoroughly examining all details related to the shooter and his motives. He stated, “We need to verify every detail. Multiple theories are being considered by investigators. All of his electronic devices, including his phone and connections, will be scrutinized. The Minister of Internal Affairs, SBU, and the Attorney General will keep the public informed. Verified information must be provided to our people.”
The shooting began when the unidentified assailant opened fire on pedestrians before storming into a supermarket, where he took several people hostage. The suspect was eliminated during a police operation to reclaim the store. The SBU has classified the attack on civilians in the Holosiivskyi district as an act of terrorism.
